Polices and Procedures

The Dr. Harley E. Flack Student Mentoring Program, Ujima Female Student Component is open and available for all students attending Rowan University.

Eligibility of Mentors, Sisterlinks and Mentees

Mentors:

  • understand the significance of the mentor’s role;
  • must be knowledgeable of the Mentoring Program and abide by all rules and regulations/policies and procedures of the University;
  • include administration, faculty (full-time or adjunct) or staff members of the University;
  • develop an understanding of first year student’s adjustment to college life concerns;
  • review mentoring concerns and collaboratively strategize on possible solutions with the Ujima Mentoring Executive Board, assigned Sisterlink, and available university resources, i.e. Career and Academic Planning Center, Center for Academic Success, Counseling and Psychological Services, EOF/MAP Office, and Financial Aid Office;
  • must agree to a one-year or more commitment to the Mentoring Component;
  • must communicate with the mentee a minimum of four times each semester;
  • must treat mentees and potential mentees courteously, respectfully and patiently in all circumstance; and
  • become familiar with policies, procedures, Rowan publications and mentor support tools:
    • The Student Information Guide
    • The Catalog
    • The Code of Conduct
    • Residential Life and University Housing Handbook
    • Terminate Housing Contract
    • Judicial Affairs (Hearing Resources and Appeal Information)
    • Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy Guide.

    Eligibility of Sisterlinks:

  • must be declared in a major with a cumulative grade point of average of 2.50;
  • should contact mentee within a week from being matched to introduce themselves and offer assistance;
  • meet with your mentee at least 5 times each semester;
  • attend and encourage your mentee to attend at least 4 events organized by Ujima each semester. These events can substitute for your meetings with your mentee;
  • respond in a timely manner to email requests from your mentor and the mentoring program coordinator;
  • meet at least twice a month with mentee to help her with any academic problems;
  • be a guide for your mentee with academics, social, and personal life; and
  • must treat mentees and potential mentees courteously, respectfully and patiently in all circumstance.

Eligibility of Mentees:

  • be a registered student at Rowan University;
  • abide by the rules and regulations of the Ujima and all others established by Rowan University;
  • be willing to communicate with her Mentor and Sisterlink either by telephone, email, or in person at least four times per semester;
  • complete a written application; and
  • participate in activities sponsored by Ujima.
